2018 will be a century since the Representation of the People Act passed, giving women in the UK the right to vote. With International Women’s Day on 8 March, calling for action towards a more inclusive and gender-equal world, we have curated a selection of Gallery images of the suffragettes to mark their inspiring campaign.

The Bloomsbury Group - Lady Ottoline Morrell's Albums

BBC’s Life in Squares brings to life vintage Bloomsbury Group photo albums. At the National Portrait Gallery we are lucky enough to have prints, paintings and photographs that document the lives of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group in their collection. One of the sources of these is Lady Ottoline Morrell’s photo albums, purchased by the National Portrait Gallery in 2003. They include detailed snapshots of the friends reading in deckchairs, picnicking under parasols and talking intensely through walks in the garden. The BBC’s recent drama about the group, Life in Squares, has brought many of these scenes to life – but we’re still more fascinated by the real thing. You can see the whole set of images here and find out more about using them.
